Students Generosity at Christmas

A campaign to support people struggling to buy food over Christmas and beyond has been a tremendous success. Caring students at Bristol Metropolitan Academy donated items to East Bristol Foodbank in the week before Christmas. In just two weeks before Christmas this whole school effort collected a whopping 700 items!

Families donated a wide range of items that included boxes and bags brimming with tins, jars, pasta, tea, coffee, and other essential items. They were collated by each tutor group in the academy, and then moved to a central storage point. This whole campaign was promoted by Bristol Mets student council who did a great job of publicising and driving this campaign throughout the academy and organising the collection of items.

Twenty five Year 11 students totaled and organised the items which were then delivered to Fishponds Baptist Church, a drop off point for the East Bristol Foodbank. East Bristol Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. The items will then be donated to families struggling to afford essentials over the Christmas period and beyond.

Nigel Cooley, Community Learning and Sports Co-ordinator said, “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of our students and families, once again showing heart-warming compassion for other people in our local community, at this time of year. It’s has been a privilege to work with East Bristol foodbank again, on this very worthwhile cause.”
