New Haywood Village Principal prioritises ‘success for every child’

A new Principal at Weston-super-Mare’s Haywood Village Academy has pledged to work with the community to help ensure every child is supported to thrive.

The Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) has confirmed the appointment of Truon Ellis to leading the school – which has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted since 2019 – into its next phase of development.

Truon brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously held the role of Vice Principal at the school. Alongside the early years of his teaching career, he dedicated 13 years as a Special Constable with Avon and Somerset Constabulary, demonstrating a strong commitment to public service.

After completing a degree in sociology and a Master’s degree in psycho-social studies at the University of the West of England, Truon went on to achieve his Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the same institution.

Motivated by his own mixed experiences of school, he has built his career around supporting those who need it most, with a focus on inclusion and opportunity.

As Principal, Truon is committed to removing barriers to learning and ensuring equity of opportunity for all pupils and families within the community. He will champion the HEART values of the Cabot Learning Federation, with a clear focus on improving life chances for every child.

At Haywood Village Academy, there will be a continued emphasis on nurturing ‘lovely people’ – pupils who the community can be proud of.

Truon aims to build on the strong foundations established by departing Principal Craig Jones and the dedicated teaching team, further enhancing the quality of teaching and learning, and delivering a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum.

The Academy will also deepen its engagement with the local community and stakeholders, working ‘beyond the school gate’ to strengthen its role as a hub for the area.

Craig Jones, Executive Principal for the Cabot Learning Federation, said: “The Cabot Learning Federation ran an external recruitment process, and against a strong field of applicants, Truon Ellis demonstrated a high degree of educational expertise and an inspiring vision for the future of the academy.”

On his appointment, Truon Ellis said: “It is a privilege to be appointed Principal at Haywood Village Academy.

“I am passionate about ensuring every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.

“I look forward to working closely with our pupils, staff, families and the wider community to build on the strong foundations already in place and to continue developing a school we can all be proud of.”

Outside of work, Truon enjoys spending time with his young family and taking part in a range of sports. He is also a long-suffering supporter of Bristol Rovers.
