Pupils at Frome Vale Academy protest proposed cuts to lollipop staff

A money-saving plan to axe school crossing patrols across Bristol has sparked uproar from parent – and from pupils at Frome Vale Academy, who decided to fight the decision by staging a peaceful protest in support of their lollipop person.

Arranged and organised entirely by the children, the protest saw more than 50 pupils make banners and placards to demonstrate at their local zebra crossing, where they are normally safely guided by their lollipop person.

In addition to their demonstration, the pupils also organised a petition to block the move, which already contains over 140 signatures.

Jan Saunders, Principal of Frome Vale Academy, praised the pupils’ efforts, saying: “This is a great example of Frome Vale Citizens showing social action and demonstrating that they care about the problems and issues that are important in our community.”

She went on to say: “Pupils have shown extraordinary initiative and teamwork, and it’s inspiring to see such young members of our community stand up for what they believe in.

“Their efforts are a powerful reminder of the importance of keeping our streets safe for everyone, especially children.”

The protest has received significant support from local parents and community members, highlighting the importance of lollipop staff in ensuring the safety of schoolchildren.
