Teen reporters from Priory School have been training up the next generation of journalists at Herons’ Moor Primary School in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

Poppy and Isabella, both 13, and Rosie, 12, swapped notebooks for mentoring roles as they ran a live Good News Room for 9 to 11-year-olds — sharing the skills, confidence and positivity at the heart of the Good News Post programme.

Children across the country swapped their traditional school uniforms for the costumes of their favourite literary characters as schools celebrated World Book Day, the annual event dedicated to promoting reading and literacy.

From wizards and magical creatures to beloved storybook heroes, classrooms were filled with pupils dressed as characters such as Harry Potter, Matilda and The Gruffalo, highlighting the joy and imagination that books bring to young readers.

The celebration is part of World Book Day, a nationwide initiative designed to encourage children to discover the pleasure of reading and to help foster lifelong literacy skills.

Three students in Weston-super-Mare have helped collect hundreds of kilograms of donations through a food collection.

Hans Price Academy pupils Gracie, Emma, and Alana organised the collection as part of their volunteering section for the bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

When MP for Bristol East Kerry McCarthy announced the expansion of free breakfast clubs to three more schools in the city on Facebook in December 2025, the reaction online was swift – and often scathing.

“It’s not ‘free’, the taxpayers are paying for it,” one person wrote. Others asked why “parents weren’t bothering to feed their kids” or suggested schools were picking up the slack for parents who are “ducking their duties”.

Dozens of pupils at a school near Taunton have been recognised for their achievements in a national maths competition.

Students in years nine and 10 from Monkton Wood Academy took part in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge, earning a total of 37 bronze, silver, and gold awards.

Hans Price Academy has made a huge donation to the life-saving RNLI charity’s Weston-super-Mare branch, following the school’s highly-successful fireworks night.

The event – held in school grounds – brought together families, friends and members of the local community for an evening of celebration and fundraising. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who attended, an impressive £1,645.66 was raised.

One of Bristol’s leading educators has been awarded a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours in recognition of his work to ‘tackle educational inequality’ in the South West.

Steve Taylor is Chief Executive Officer of the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF), a multi-academy trust founded in Bristol, but now operating 36 schools between Gloucestershire and Somerset.
